Doughnut Toppers and What’s Joy the Baker Eating?
Written by joythebaker on August 21, 2008 – 7:23 pm -
I was gifted the most gorgeous homegrown peaches and figs yesterday. I thought for a few fleeting seconds what kind of treat I could bake up with these goodies. I simply couldn’t even bear the thought of waiting for the oven to preheat and batter to come together. I reached for my small knife and dug into the summer fruit. The peaches were just slightly tart and the figs… OH! The figs had me thinking dirty dirty thoughts- that’s how you know a fig is on point.
This fruit bowl was also a nice break from my doughnut feast.
The doughnuts were a hit? You liked the doughnuts? A few of you mentioned wanting some different options for glazes and toppings. I aim to please. Jump on over and ruffle through the doughnut toppings. Find your fancy and get frying!

Maple Glaze
Bon Appetit November 1995
You might consider doubling this recipe and drizzling it on everything you know and love.
1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter
2 tablespoons pure maple syrup
2 tablespoons whipping cream
6 tablespoons powdered sugar, sifted
Melt butter with maple syrup and cream in heavy small saucepan. Remove from heat. Add powdered sugar and whisk until smooth. Cool glaze until slightly thickened, about 15 minutes. Dip doughnuts into glaze or drizzle glaze over doughnuts.
Orange Glaze
2 cups confectioners’ sugar
3 tablespoons strained fresh orange juice
1 tablespoon orange-flavored liqueur
Sift confectioners’ sugar into a small saucepan and stir in orange juice and liqueur to make a smooth paste. Heat glaze over moderately high heat until just warm to the touch. Dip doughnuts into glaze or drip glaze over doughnuts.
Vanilla Glaze
1 (16-ounce) package powdered sugar
5 tablespoons milk
2 teaspoons vanilla
Stir together 1 (16-ounce) package powdered sugar, 5 tablespoons milk, and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract just until powdered sugar is moistened and mixture is smooth. Add an additional tablespoon of milk, if needed. Dip doughnuts into glaze or drip glaze over doughnuts.
Or toss freshly fried doughnuts in:
Powdered Sugar
Cinnamon Sugar
1 cup granulated sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
Tackle homemade doughnuts. If I can do it, you can do it!

I adore reading your blog even if I always do become frustratingly hungry while doing so.

That’s some good looking produce. I’ve wanted a fig tree in my yard for a while now…maybe next year…I could just sit under it for two months and be happy eating nothing but figs
Oh no, you can’t do this to me Joy! I have a wedding in a month and more donut goodness is not what I need to be tempted with! Although I love it and will enjoy every moment of the vanilla glaze. Thanks for the donut post though – my house was full of guests last night and they just died over them!
Do you know how badly I have been craving doughnuts? Like mad! And I don’t even love doughnuts that much!
The first time I had a fig it was fresh off the tree, warmed by the sun. I had no idea how to describe it at that point in time. Your “The figs had me thinking dirty dirty thoughts” so took me back to that moment!
