Hi: This is in response to fruit flies. I make Kombucha Tea and fruit flies love it. I use a laundry bag I bought at Walmart and cut it into the shape I need to fit the opening of the jar. I place a piece of the fabric over the opening of the jar and place a good rubberband over the fabric around the top of the jar. Make sure this rubberband is tight. And there will be small folds around the fabric where the rubberband is, gently pull these out, otherwise the flies will get in through the folds. They are good at what they do. You can use any type of sheer fabric with small enough holes.
Also I have others. Hope this helps you.

I keep a small cup filled with apple cider vinegar and a drop of dish liquid next to my fruit (and other attractions) The fruit flies are attracted to it (above all else) but the detergent breaks the surface tension and they can't fly away. I'm sure putting it near the sourdough would work too.

Ugh, I hate fruit flies. My cousin got a little Venus flytrap plant in a tiny pot that actually took care of her fruit fly trouble over the summer. Pretty smart I thought.

It's been only 48 hours but today my starter was very puffy (it almost overflowed!) and when I stirred the hooch back in, it was very frothy. I've moved it to another container and will give it a few more days on the counter. I can't wait to make bread!
