These are the four pictures that are going to make you seriously consider why you aren’t in your kitchen right this second making these pancakes.
These are the four pictures that might just have you prioritizing the next few hours, the next few days, heck(!) your entire weekend around these pancakes.
Yea… that just happened. I just dropped that madness on you. I know… totally unfair.
These Milk Chocolate Chip Buttermilk Pancakes will weaken all defenses. They’ll make you completely susceptible to lounging in bed for an early afternoon nap. They’ll make it even more impossible to remove yourself from the couch to get any weekend chores done. These pancakes are perfect for that epic unproductive weekend you’ve been planning. You were planning one of those weekends, weren’t you?
In short, these pancakes are a blessing from the heavens.
Milk Chocolate Buttermilk Pancakes
adapted from BlogChef
makes lots, enough for four people.
2 eggs
2 cups flour
2 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups buttermilk
4 tablespoons butter, melted and cooled
½ teaspoons vanilla extract
1/2- 3/4 cup milk chocolate chips (depending on how chippy you feel)
oil or cooking spray (for cooking)
Step 1: In a large bowl beat eggs. Add buttermilk, butter and vanilla and mix well. Add flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well until mostly smooth. Fold in chocolate chips and let batter set for a few minutes.
Step 2: Heat griddle or pan over medium heat. Add a teaspoon of oil to the pan or spray with cooking spray. You can test to see if the pan is hot enough by adding a few drops of water, if or when the drops start to dance its hot enough.
Step 3: Pour 2 Tablespoons of batter onto the griddle. Cook on the first side until bubbles that form start to pop. You can also gently lift up the pancake to make sure the bottom is not overcooking, if it is the pan may be too hot and you will need to adjust the heat. Flip the pancake over with a spatula and cook until golden brown. Repeat until all the batter is gone. Let cooked pancakes rest on a heat proof plate in a 200 degree F oven until ready to serve.

Since I already have grand plans for my chocolate chips tomorrow morning (preparing mint chocolate chip snow-top cookies before flying to AZ on Sunday to surprise my mom), I wonder if I can substitute blueberries to make the most amazing blueberry buttermilk pancakes ever…?
If not, I’ll just sit here and drool on my keyboard for a bit longer.

December 13th, 2008 at 8:41 am
My husband made these for me this morning and they are delicious! I printed this recipe out and said “honey, I want you to make these for me in the morning”. He totally went out early this morning for buttermilk just to make these
I had mine with bosenberry syrup — they would be fabulous with whipped cream and raspberries, too! Yum — thanks so much!

Nothing is better than chocolate chip pancakes. Your photos are absolutely mouthwatering. I think I know what I’m making for breakfast tomorrow
December 13th, 2008 at 5:50 pm
My little one is fanatical about pancakes. I can’t imagine what would happen if he ever found out it was possible to have them with chocolate chips. I would never get him to eat anything else!
Looking forward to one of those lounging weekends….in January probably.
December 13th, 2008 at 5:54 pm
My gawd, girl, you are trying to kill us with these photos of yours. I’m about to go cook seafood for dinner, but now all I want are milk chocolate buttermilk pancakes! I wonder if I can have pancakes for dinner, and have seafood for breakfast tomorrow?

I used to think chocolate chips in pancakes were disgusting until a friend force fed me and now I’m an addict. Way too much sugar for the morning but well, well worth it. I am DYING from those photos!
December 16th, 2008 at 11:50 am
They sound fantastic and the pictures are incredible!

Those look so good! Nice shots of the dripping action!
January 1st, 2009 at 1:07 pm
I just made these for breakfast and they are AWESOME!!! I love the idea of making them smaller, it feels less indulgent. My kids ate these up with no complaints. My 3 year old son proclaimed “Mama, these are the best pancakes ever!” Sure, he’s only 3, but I think he’s on to something
The batter itself without any chocolate chips is an excellent pancake batter as well. Easy and simple to make, which is also another great thing about them.
Love your blog, can’t wait to make more of your recipes!
January 4th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
These have got to be the best looking pancakes I’ve ever seen! Wow!
January 6th, 2009 at 7:52 am
omg this look so gud
January 9th, 2009 at 4:58 pm
These were awesome! I halfed the recipe, since I was making them just for me, and they were still way too many! Next time I will half the halfed version when I make them for myself haha.
I plan to make these for my stepdaughters in a few days! They have been begging me to make chocolate chip pancakes for them. Thanks!!!!!
January 18th, 2009 at 11:15 pm
I am planning on making these tomorrow morning, but I’d like to save the batter for the morning after as well. Is it okay to refrigerator the remaining batter?
January 19th, 2009 at 8:51 pm
oh my god I made these this morning and they’re f****** bomb! I hope that’s okay to say on here…
January 19th, 2009 at 9:33 pm

Nooooooo!
I didn’t even need to see the pictures. I just read the title.
I’m about to make cheese crackers topped with caraway seeds. Why do I have to stumble upon a blog filled with sweet recipes at such moment?
I love your recipes.

I love pancakes, but most importantly my two lil ones love them. Especially when there filled with chocolate chips. I’m going to make these for them and will let you know how it goes!

I made these last night without the chocolate chips (terrible, I know, but I didn’t have them handy). Regardless, they were the best fluffiest pancakes ever. Thank you!
May 31st, 2009 at 9:43 am
Yummmm….I made these this morning, exactly as the recipe says. After using a box mix for pancakes for years, I forgot how deliciously fluffy and thick REAL pancakes are! I always use chocolate chips so that wasn’t new for me so this time I sliced bananas on top and finished them with powdered sugar…decadent. Thanks Joy for waking me up to the beauty of real pancakes again!
June 5th, 2009 at 8:28 am
My husband requested chocolate chip pancakes for his birthday dinner, yesterday. These were fabulous! It was the first time I’d used buttermilk for pancakes, and you’ve convinced me there is no other way to make them…so fluffy!
Thanks, Joy.

I’ve always thrown chocolate chips in my box mix pancakes, but this time I decided to make the pancakes from scratch using this recipe. What a difference! My 19 year old son and his girlfriend both commented on how delicious these were, and they didn’t know they were from scratch, they just said how good they were! No more box mixes for me! These were great!
