Weekend Meal Inspiration
Written by joythebaker on April 3, 2009 – 8:40 am -A good while back I found myself half way through a bottle of wine on a Saturday night, sitting alone on my patio watching cute cat videos on YouTube.
Wait… should I be embarrassed about revealing this to you? Just wait… it gets better.
I was feeling pretty content with my Saturday night of wine and kittens, except, I didn’t really want to be alone. Sometime after my last glass of wine, and before I started eating frozen yogurt straight from the container, I found myself filling out one of those online dating service profiles. Yea… I was totally having that moment in my life.
Because there’s no shame in my game, I won’t even hesitate in telling you that filling out one of those profiles is a complex mixture of fun, excitement and nausea. So many questions to answer. So many clever quips to whip up. So many ways to try and say that I’m weird and cool, and I spend a lot of time in my kitchen, and I kinda have a thing for kitten videos and wine and frozen yogurt…. without saying anything about kittens and wine and frozen yogurt. That, after all, might come across as too weird.
What I really wanted to say was something like.. “Hey! You’re cool. I’m cool. Let’s get to know each other. I’ll make us pizza. I’ll make us salad, but I won’t be mad if you don’t really want to eat it. Cookies. I can make those too. Also… I like Star Wars, except I might call ‘Storm Troopers’ ‘Star Troopers’ on accident. And… your Mom is going to love me, and I’m going to think she’s pretty rad too. Let’s do this!”
It all worked out. I think I may have had that profile up for about a month before I realized it wasn’t really my scene. I have someone pretty awesome to make pizza for now. He knows all about the wine and kitten videos and frozen yogurt. He likes all those things too… plus Star Wars. That feels pretty nice.
I suppose that was all just the long way of saying that I think you should make dinner this weekend. Something down to earth and comforting like pizza and salad, with cookies for dessert. If you also wanted to drink wine and watch kitten videos, you’d totally have the thumbs up from me!

That’s all it took. I am making that this weekend!
show us this man!
Sounds like a great meal to me! Y’know, I met my boyfriend on the Internet and ended up moving halfway across the country to move in with him (from CA to TX). We’ve been together 5 years now. I think your ideal profile would have been perfect.
And being familiar with / liking Star Wars is very important. Glad you worked that out. Oh yeah, and kittens! Gotta have those!
Love your blog! The pictures are amazing. I met my husband on one of those online dating services. We’ve been married 5 years this May! My husband wasn’t much of a foodie before we were married, but since he married this amateur foodie he’s slowly being converted. Thanks for posting all these wonderful recipe ideas!
You, my dear, are the one who is rad! Glad you have someone to make pizza & cookies for who doesn’t judge
Hope you have a great weekend!
Hi Joy! Frozen yogurt, kittens, and Star Wars — what guy wouldn’t like that.
Jim and I met through an online dating thingy and are engaged now. We keep joking that we’ll go on a commercial saying things like “I finally found that special someone who loves to eat tête ce chon and spends more money on food than rent.”
Glad you found someone to eat cookies with!
Tête de Cochon, I mean.
I met my bf online 2.5 years ago and we are getting married in 9 weeks!
your pizza looks awesome…and the cooookies…
This could possibly be my most favorite meal ever. I LOVE pepperoni and black olive pizza and homemade ceasar dressing and brownie cookies. Seriously, awesome. It is like you are reading my mind.
LOL What’s with the kitten/cat videos all of a sudden? Seems everyone I know or talk to or read is into cats and kittens. Gotta love the creatures.
Glad you found a friend.
Love your blog!
This was really, really funny.
Nothing wrong with cooking a nice dinner for two or just one!
This is the perfect weekend meal! My boyfriend and I love making homemade pizza together, it’s a weekly tradition!
I am in a “drink a bottle of wine and watch kitten videos on youtube on a sat. night” point in my life.. it’s good to hear there is still hope in the world! haha
Everything looks so delicious especially the cookies of course!
The pizza is a weekly tradition for me too…my husband likes it on friday night, to celebrate the incoming weekend! We like it with pepperoni and ham (in mine there are capers too) and tonight we have chocolate chip cookies, too!! And what is better than watching cat’s video? they are so cute! So enjoy your weekend, I’m cooking pizza right now
cheers
Martina
Ooh a homemade pizza sounds soo good right about now. And I love how you put a whole meal together!
I love Saturday night. My favourite is a pizza , tv show and cookies. so this is my perfect night
those cookies look delicious.
I met my DH online too, its no bad thing. The meal sounds great, homemade pizza yum, we often have that, and that means loads of garlic as long as we both eat it. LOL
Your description reminds me of the opening scene of Bridget Jones’ Diary where she’s drinking wine and singing along to “All by Myself.” I love your honesty and sense of humour! Good luck with the dating profile. You seem like a wonderful person, and whoever you deem worthy of a date will be lucky!
Also, that pizza looks amazing.
This post made me feel all warm and fuzzy, just like a cute kitty on YouTube. The food is almost secondary to the contentment that comes across from the process of making it here! ALMOST.
homemade pizza must be followed with anything-chocolate cookie. purrrfect.
Have you ever seen the movie ‘Stranger than Fiction’? You remind me of the baker girl. (What I know of you) Cheers to the partner… and pizza and cookies.
Congrats on the new bf!! Now you are one step closer to getting those hugs you were talking about a couple of months ago. *smile* At least you can get practice hugs in the meantime hehe.
You are so funny. I really like your writting style. You make it feel like we are sitting in the kitchen while you cook. Thanks for all the sharing. I think I am going to try the Gluten Free Polenta cake this weekend. Have a wonderful weekend.

Such a charming post!
You know what they say about the way to a man’s heart…good for you! We eat homemade pizza every friday. It’s so easy, so cheap (compared to the $20 takeout) and sooooo good.
Mmm… pizza sounds good. And I have a recipe for some awesome homemade sauce, too. That might, indeed, be my dinner tomorrow evening!
This just made me smile. And crave Caesar salad.
I love it! I just love to read your posts. You are incredibly witty!
It’s a JOY to read your blog. I hope you’ve found the person for whom you can make pizza and salad for years to come…I’ve been lucky to have one for 15 years now…Food is definitely the way to a mate’s heart!
I love your posts because you really put yourself out there. It’s like a tell-all session. This dinner looks fabulous and I bet you two enjoyed yourselves.
Ohhhh… I have so been there…. the wine, the online thing…. maybe not the kitten videos but everything else! And there is nothing like homemade pizza, salad and someone to share it with.
Your post had me laughing…and thanking my lucky stars. I’m an oldie, but goodie, and am so thankful my dating days are behind me. It was fun, but it was exhausting too.
Enjoy the pizza AND the company.
I have been reading your blog too long not to ever leave a comment. I absolutely love it, like everyone else around here…. Love your stories, recipes, posts and pictures. It’s fabulous, Joy!
What a precious post, Joy! This is total inspiration. Hope you have a great weekend!
One of my best friends just ventured into the online dating scene. When I read the first half of your entry, my little heart was hoping, hoping you two would end up meeting! Then I read the other half of your entry and now see that my friend sure missed out. Congrats on your someone! He’s lucky because you are sooo rad! I love your blog; I read it daily. Your recipes, pictures, and writing style are great too. Have a good weekend!
Mmmmm I made the cookies and the guys at worked LOVED ‘em =D Thanks for inspiring me to be the cookie fairy!
Aaaaww what a sweet story and I’ve been there too and can totally relate!!! Lucky guy;)
I’m digging those cookies!
Hi Joy, I loved your post. It reminded me of my 20’s.
Your bf is very lucky indeed! Your recipes and writing style are fantastic. Have you thought about writing a cook book?
It’s been decades since I dated (and awkwardly, when I did), but seeing the experience through your eyes made me smile. I really, really liked the insight. “Hey! You’re cool. I’m cool. Let’s get to know each other. ” That really says it all, doesn’t it?
Thanks for sharing the image.
I just found your blog and thought I’d glance through. I was still with you all the way down to the bottom of the page, giggling and smiling. All that humor sure makes the food taste great. Not sure where I start with the recipes – cookies, salad – pizza? Choices, choices. I’ll just have to try them all.
What’s great is that the wine and kitten videos stick around through the relationship. Because if my guy was going to take that away, it’d be sad. Enjoy your cookies and Star Troopers.

This weekend my kids were home (all grownups) and I made your entire weekend meal! What a hit! We have made the Brownie cookies twice and I even found the cute little chocolate covered sunflower seeds. I have been using Deb’s pizza dough for a while now and it never fails to be a huge success. Making Caeser dressing was a first for me and everyone loved it.
I love your blog. Thanks for sharing.

Well, I can’t relate to the on-line dating, but I am really happy for you finding someone to share with. Not too much is better than homemade pizza. I make it pretty much every Friday night. I don’t usually make a salad and cookies too. Although it sounds wonderful, I get full on 2 pieces of pizza!
Your blog makes me smile every time I read it, especially this post. We make pizza every Friday night — my husband makes the dough (the only time he touches the kitchen aid), and I assemble the pizzas. Our favorite is fresh mozzarella, crisped pepperoni added during the last minute, pesto and banana peppers. Your post helped me to remember how fortunate I am to be able to make pizza with my fabulous husband tonight.
I hope your partner knows how lucky he is to be with such a talented and hip person such as yourself.
