Weekend Meal Inspiration

Pizza- From Scratch

A good while back I found myself half way through a bottle of wine on a Saturday night, sitting alone on my patio watching cute cat videos on YouTube.

Wait… should I be embarrassed about revealing this to you?  Just wait… it gets better.

I was feeling pretty content with my Saturday night of wine and kittens, except, I didn’t really want to be alone.  Sometime after my last glass of wine, and before I started eating frozen yogurt straight from the container, I found myself filling out one of those online dating service profiles.  Yea… I was totally having that moment in my life.

Because there’s no shame in my game, I won’t even hesitate in telling you that filling out one of those profiles is a complex mixture of fun, excitement and nausea.  So many questions to answer.  So many clever quips to whip up.  So many ways to try and say that I’m weird and cool, and I spend a lot of time in my kitchen, and I kinda have a thing for kitten videos and wine and frozen yogurt…. without saying anything about kittens and wine and frozen yogurt.  That, after all, might come across as too weird.

What I really wanted to say was something like.. “Hey!  You’re cool.  I’m cool.  Let’s get to know each other.  I’ll make us pizza.  I’ll make us salad, but I won’t be mad if you don’t really want to eat it.  Cookies.  I can make those too.  Also… I like Star Wars, except I might call ‘Storm Troopers’ ‘Star Troopers’ on accident.  And… your Mom is going to love me, and I’m going to think she’s pretty rad too.  Let’s do this!”

It all worked out.  I think I may have had that profile up for about a month before I realized it wasn’t really my scene.  I have someone pretty awesome to make pizza for now.  He knows all about the wine and kitten videos and frozen yogurt.  He likes all those things too… plus Star Wars.  That feels pretty nice.

I suppose that was all just the long way of saying that I think you should make dinner this weekend.  Something down to earth and comforting like pizza and salad, with cookies for dessert.  If you also wanted to drink wine and watch kitten videos, you’d totally have the thumbs up from me!

Sounds like a great meal to me! Y’know, I met my boyfriend on the Internet and ended up moving halfway across the country to move in with him (from CA to TX). We’ve been together 5 years now. I think your ideal profile would have been perfect.

And being familiar with / liking Star Wars is very important. Glad you worked that out. Oh yeah, and kittens! Gotta have those! :)

Love your blog! The pictures are amazing. I met my husband on one of those online dating services. We’ve been married 5 years this May! My husband wasn’t much of a foodie before we were married, but since he married this amateur foodie he’s slowly being converted. Thanks for posting all these wonderful recipe ideas!

Hi Joy! Frozen yogurt, kittens, and Star Wars — what guy wouldn’t like that.

Jim and I met through an online dating thingy and are engaged now. We keep joking that we’ll go on a commercial saying things like “I finally found that special someone who loves to eat tête ce chon and spends more money on food than rent.” :D Glad you found someone to eat cookies with!

Your description reminds me of the opening scene of Bridget Jones’ Diary where she’s drinking wine and singing along to “All by Myself.” I love your honesty and sense of humour! Good luck with the dating profile. You seem like a wonderful person, and whoever you deem worthy of a date will be lucky!

    Also, that pizza looks amazing.

It’s been decades since I dated (and awkwardly, when I did), but seeing the experience through your eyes made me smile. I really, really liked the insight. “Hey! You’re cool. I’m cool. Let’s get to know each other. ” That really says it all, doesn’t it?

    Thanks for sharing the image.

I just found your blog and thought I’d glance through. I was still with you all the way down to the bottom of the page, giggling and smiling. All that humor sure makes the food taste great. Not sure where I start with the recipes – cookies, salad – pizza? Choices, choices. I’ll just have to try them all.

  41. 41

What’s great is that the wine and kitten videos stick around through the relationship. Because if my guy was going to take that away, it’d be sad. Enjoy your cookies and Star Troopers.

    Joy -
This weekend my kids were home (all grownups) and I made your entire weekend meal! What a hit! We have made the Brownie cookies twice and I even found the cute little chocolate covered sunflower seeds. I have been using Deb’s pizza dough for a while now and it never fails to be a huge success. Making Caeser dressing was a first for me and everyone loved it.
I love your blog. Thanks for sharing.

Well, I can’t relate to the on-line dating, but I am really happy for you finding someone to share with. Not too much is better than homemade pizza. I make it pretty much every Friday night. I don’t usually make a salad and cookies too. Although it sounds wonderful, I get full on 2 pieces of pizza!

    Mel says:

Your blog makes me smile every time I read it, especially this post. We make pizza every Friday night — my husband makes the dough (the only time he touches the kitchen aid), and I assemble the pizzas. Our favorite is fresh mozzarella, crisped pepperoni added during the last minute, pesto and banana peppers. Your post helped me to remember how fortunate I am to be able to make pizza with my fabulous husband tonight.

I hope your partner knows how lucky he is to be with such a talented and hip person such as yourself.

I just stumbled across your blog in a bored haze of link-clicking, and I was struck with a rare desire to comment.

I find you extremely likable. That’s pretty much all I had to say. You make me feel like buying a better camera and being more disciplined in the baking/blogging/going after dreams side of my life.

(For the record, I’m not hitting on you. This is just what good, funny writing and delicious-looking baked goods do to me. I get all warm and fuzzy inside.)
