Peach Brulee

Peach Brulee

Reason #457 why I love this warm weather, sunny spring that leads into summertime:  the ponytail.

It’s bouncy, it’s festive, it helps me look like I’m having a good time even when I’m just standing in line at the grocery store, and it makes me feel like a cheerleader… which is strangely satisfying.

The ponytail is simple and uncomplicated.  I think I’m going to make the ponytail, and the fun simplicity it represents, the theme for the lovely summer we’re working towards.

I think that summer fruit is so fun and just bursting with bright flavors.   Most need very little fuss when it comes to preparation.  Why complicate something that’s already lovely?

This Peach Brulee is just three ingredients and it’s a gorgeous way to start the day.  Make it for breakfast and top the warm peaches with thick Greek yogurt, or make enough peach halves to serve after a big dinner with friends and family.  For one or for many, this simple peach recipe shows off the best of what’s in store for us this summer.  Go forth and broil…. and please sport a ponytail this summer.  It’s rad.

for one serving, but can easily be increased according to your needs

adapted from Good Food on kcrw

Print this recipe!

1 peach, cut in half with pit removed

2 spoonfuls brown sugar

2 spoonfuls sour cream, creme fraiche, yogurt or whipped cream

Turn on the oven’s broiler.  Cut peach in half, remove pit and place in a broiler safe pan, cut side up.  Sprinkle brown sugar over the tops of he peaches.  Place in the broiler, very close to the flame.  Stand by the oven, you don’t have time to check the mail.  Check the peaches every minute, the sugar will brown in about 2 minutes, if not sooner.

Remove from the oven once the sugar has become brown and toasted.  Let cool for one minute.  Carefully place peach halves on a plate and dollop the center of the peach with a touch of sour cream or creme fraiche or yogurt.  Serve immediately.

Hi Joy, I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoy visiting your blog. I just baked your strawberry coffee cake, and it is a hit. My hubby told me to make this for our next family reunion, it is that good!! I did not have fresh strawberries, so I used frozen raspberries and added about 2 cups instead of 1, and baked this in a 7″x11″ pan, as I did not have a 10″x10″ pan. The cake turned out beautifully, and the house smelled of buttery goodness. Unfortunately, I suffer from food intolerances/allergies, so I cannot eat what I bake, but my husband is my trusty critic, and he raved about this cake, which is truly a keeper. Thanks for all your hard work, and wonderful stories and recipes. From a Canadian fan, Annie.

Hi Joy! What a cutesy blog :) If only I lived in CA and not chicago I’d totally hop on the picnic train. but oh well ;). I almost made the strawberry coffee cake with my farmer’s market treasures but instead made a frozen yogurt with taht and the rhubarb. – i ran outta steam and that was much easier! will make it next time though!

Lots of ponytails here! I always tell the hair lady to cut it so it’s still long enough for a ponytail:)

Definitely yes to the peaches, but no to the ponytail. Just doesn’t work for me. Don’t take it personally!

You know what else rocks my summer socks off? Cotton jumpers. I know, they are a little hipster-y but we can pull it off :)

Ooh yummy! I wonder how it would be to replace agave nectar for the sugar? That could create a really nice caramel… hmmm.

Wow! I usually use another recipe which is pretty similar: peach cut in half, pit removed with some flesh of the peach (to have a larger hole); then I mix together 1 egg, some typical italian macaroons, the flesh of the peach and one tablespoon sugar; I make a little ball to put in the peach and cook in the oven 2 – 3 mins.
I cannot wait to try your recipe!!!!

WHAT THE?!?!?! what is it about everything you cook that makes every fiber in me want to run out immediately and buy the ingredients to make it. It’s like some sort of crazy obsession. You’re like the Elvis of cooking to me.. Just kidding.. sorta.. :-D.. you know what is even better than just wearing a pony tail? Wearing a ponytail while chewing a big piece (maybe two) of Dubble Bubble (not super bubble- mind you)- and blowing bubbles

Saw some early peaches in my grocery store the other day … if I wasn’t still so obsessed with berries, I’d have picked ‘em up … now I regret it, because these bruleed (so much better than saying “broiled”) peaches are what I want for breakfast today!!

Kristen June 9, 2009 at 7:10 am

if peaches are ponytails, what will piggytails bring forth? great recipe. I hate peaches, but still might try it (anything with brown sugar is bound to be delish).

Sarah June 9, 2009 at 7:31 am

mmm, looks yummy!

um, also? I have a ponytail pretty often and most definitely do not feel like a cheerleader. It’s more of a “get this ridiculous hair out of my face” kind of thing.

I can’t believe how good the peaches I’ve been getting are, but this might just take them to a whole new level.

We’d like this any day…even perhaps for breakfast. Sprinkle them with a little oats, crystallized ginger and brown sugar and we’re ready to eat!

I like the idea of the sweet, slightly crunch top of the peach bathed in cream. It wouldn’t look as pretty as your dollop, but I would love to just pour some 10% cream on top and see how that tastes. Yum.

I’m thinking Bullet Burbon Cream…with Candied Pecan. Not much more to say than that.

So I tried these today and they were delicious and simple. Adding a dollop of sour cream was the perfect finishing touch; it was refreshing and balanced the sweetness of the peaches. Also, the peaches became extra extra juicy after the broiler. I felt like I was eating a waterballoon. Loved it :)

Unfortunately, my peaches didn’t caramelize as beautifully as yours, but they still tasted amazing. Thank you againnn <3
