Mini Chocolate Dipped Bananas

Lovely friends… hi.  Dear readers… hello.

Let’s talk about keeping it classy.  Hot dang! I try hard to keep it classy.  Holy smokes… do I ever fail sometimes.

Let’s discuss classy versus not classy, and what the heck chocolate dipped bananas have to do with anything.

Classy:  a tastefully short summer sundress.  Not class:  booty shorts that awkwardly bunch in the crotch.

Classy:  gracefully switching from wine to water at the company picnic.  Not classy:  maybe getting drunk and punching the sous chef in the face.  Oops.

Classy:  How much I love listening to public radio.  Not classy:  How much I love to watch The Real Housewives of  New Jersey.  Guilty… but why do they yell so much?

Classy: Enjoying mini chocolate dipped bananas on a summer afternoon.  Not as classy:  Trying to gnaw your way through a giant chocolate dipped banana.  It’s just not pretty friends.  Let’s try to avoid this scene this summer.  I think we all know why.

In case you’re wondering what I’ll be eating all summer, the answer is homemade kettle corn and these little lovelies.  Gracious heavens, how have I not come to these sooner!?  Use the best chocolate you can get your hands on.  I used a Valrhona 70% chocolate.  How about nuts!?  Heck yes!  I liked chopped honey roasted peanuts, but walnuts or toasted pecans would be lovely too.

3 firm but ripe bananas

9- 12 wooden popsicle sticks or lollipop sticks

2 cups chocolate chips or chunks, melted

1/2 cup nuts of your choice, pulverized in the food processor or finely chopped.

Peel three firm bananas and slice each banana into thirds or fourths.  Each banana slice should be about 3 inches tall.

Place wooden sticks or lollipop sticks through the center of one end of the banana slice, about 2 inches deep.

Place of a tray or plate, making sure that the bananas do not touch, cover with plastic wrap and freeze for four hours, or overnight.

Using a food processor, pulse the nuts until they are chopped very fine.  You can also do this by hand, it just takes a bit longer.  Place in a bowl and set aside for the dipping.

Melt chocolate over a double boiler.  Simmer 3 inches of water in a pot, place the chocolate in a heat proof bowl and, once the water is simmering, place the bowl of chocolate over the simmering water.  The water should not touch the bottom of the bowl.  Stir the chocolate pieces  occasionally until they’re all melted.

Remove bananas from the freezer, dip in chocolate, roll in nuts and place on a foil lined baking sheet.  When all the bananas are dipped, return to the freezer for 30 minutes to harden.  Once hard, wrap individually in plastic wrap and store in the freezer until you’re ready to snack on them.  Yum!  I think they’re best eaten when thawed at room temperature for about 7 minutes.

Joy, I love to bake and I love your blog the best! I just discovered it a month or so ago and have made your cinnamon bun muffins, the nectarine and cream cobbler twice and just made these bananas today. I used milk chocolate chips but definitely think the dark chocolate would be better. I rolled some in honey roasted peanuts and some in coconut. I think toasted coconut would be perfect. Happy 4th of July! I absolutely love your blog and especially your recipes. I want to try every one but I am a new mom so its hard to keep up!

Here in Austin, they just opened a banana stand (”There’s always money in the banana stand!”) but I think that these are much better looking and probably easier to make in the coolness of my air conditioned house.

Sorry, couldn’t not comment without adding a Arrested Development quote. C”MON!

YUM! Brings back memories from my childhood staying at my aunts. She always made these and let us kids garnish, or rather, very liberously, coat the outside with whatever crumbled goodies we could think of!

I LOVE frozen bananas! They take me back to my childhood in SoCal and Balboa Island. My kids love them too. I love a good quality chocolate, but the kids want fast. I keep frozen bananas ready for when friends come over and let them use the Magic Shell chocolate. It is so fast. They love to make them on thier own and top with nuts coconut or nonparels.

Am I the only one who failed big time trying to make these? The chocolate just clumped up and slid off. I have to figure out what I’m doing wrong.

ooh I should make this for my son, only minus the nuts as my youngest has a peanut allergy. I think we can decorate them with something else though! Your’s look lovely!

The photos are great. Mmmm. I’d like to add a couple of tips to this recipe that I’ve learned from experience. First, it’s really important to let your bananas ripen until they are covered with *small* brown spots. That ensures that their sugar level is optimal. Next, when you freeze them, do not place them in a freezer bag. Moisture that evaporates from the bananas as they freeze will result in ice crystals on the bananas if it is trapped within a plastic bag. This ice will melt into the chocolate when you dip the bananas and cause the chocolate clump. If you do see ice crystals on the frozen bananas, brush it off prior to dipping them. In addition to being a great tasting treat, frozen bananas are also a good food source.

I can’t wait to make these for my nieces/nephews this summer. Last year, I brought a few boxes from Whole Foods (cost me an arm and a leg) and it’s so much easier and cheaper to make! Plus, I love the idea of them being minis…

These are absolutely one of my favorite treats. We used to be able to get them at an ice cream stand, but that was long ago. Can’t wait to make some!

Hi Joy!
I made these the other day and they turned out great! I was doing a test run for my family–I will be making them for a friend’s bachelorette party. I thought the phalic resemblance would be quite appropriate ;0) Thanks for posting the recipe!!

One quick question, I was thinking of drizzling white chocolate over the semi sweet chocolate for a variation. For some reason the white chocolate didn’t melt like the semi sweet. Would you have any idea why? Any tips are greatly appreciated!!

THANKS!
xo

I had seen this post a couple of months ago but forgot to comment…
These are simply called “Choco-bananos” in Guatemala, where I´m from, (banano is the word for banana in spanish), and they´re made with whole bananas; they´re quite a tipical dessert here, and if we don´t buyan ice cream, then we definitively buy a choco-banano for the hot weather…

Greetings from Guatemala… you are awesome.
