Cookies plus Coffee minus the Kitchen
Written by joythebaker on September 10, 2009 – 12:25 am -After extensive… and I do mean extensive research, I’ve determined that certain items always taste better if someone else makes them for you.
It’s like when someone else draws a bath for you… maybe with bubbles or salts, and perfectly warm water. Dang, that’s a good bath… somehow way better than it would have been if you turned those bathtub faucets yourself.
So, what items always taste better if someone else makes them for you? Perfect macarons and the day’s first cup of coffee.
Cookie and a coffee? And I don’t have to move a muscle in the kitchen? It’s already delicious.
Now let me tell you about who made them for me.
There is a magical place in San Francisco. It’s called the Ferry Building. No matter how many times I’ve been to San Francisco I can always always visit the Ferry Building. Why? They have some aaaamazing food, and I always happen to be hungry.
Let me tell you about my favorite cookie and my favorite coffee in San Francisco.
Blue Bottle Coffee is a company based out of San Fransisco. They call themselves Artisanal Microroasters, which I think is a fancy way of saying that they truly care about the quality of bean they buy, and the way they treat it. In turn… they produce my absolute favorite cup of coffee. At the Ferry Building, they brew their drip coffee to order. You know what tastes so good about that? The freshness, care and attention… what else could a girl want first thing in the morning?
A cookie! Miette Patisserie! Oh heavens! Beyond cuteness! Miette makes the most lovely macaron I’ve ever had. Perfectly chewy, full of nutty bits and in flavors that make my life happy like Rose Geranium. Want to know something rad about Miette Patisserie? Their founder Megan Ray is a self taught pastry queen and got her start at the Berkeley Farmer’s Market. Yea… true. Cool, right? She makes one fine cookie. They literally taste like fun and awesome had a cookie baby. You think that’s weird… try these cookies! See for yourself.
Ferry Building. Food magic outside of the kitchen.

Biscotti is something hard to beat from a great cafe with an espresso.
Oh Joy, when I’ve started to read that post I immediately started to wonder, if it is You who writes or my Mum. Yes, My dear Mum ALWAYS said that coffee made by someone else taste better. Especially if it someone who’ll smile to You and say one nice word that will cheer you up for whole day . And You know, I wish, I met someone who will like to make me coffee or tea in the morning. As you have someone who helps you with decorating cupcakes;-)
I remember the first time I tried one of Miette’s Princess cakes…mmm, blissful happiness. And then I tried their macaron. Peace, love, harmony sandwiching a tasty lemon curd and creating a delicious edible confection. I’ve attempted to create my own macarons, with semi-success. (They got feet!) Luckily, I live somewhat close to the Ferry Building, so I can easily satisfy any macaron cravings with a trip to the city. Unfortunately, my wallet is feeling rather empty because of it.
I think a great sandwich you didn’t make is always better.
Rose geranium cookies — I’m fainting from here!
Oh my.
You are correct.
Someone else’s french fries also always seem to taste better.
My 5 year old loves to help me bake. He LOVES the stand mixer. It’s so like a boy – a TOOL for the kitchen. He dumps in the ingredients (not adds it like a lady would) in the order I tell him to, and cranks on the mixer!
However, the other day he made a sandwich for the first time. He grabbed all the ingredients out by himself and put them together on the counter (like Mama does), grabbed plates for each of us and a knife and spoon. All by himself he made two PB&J sandwiches! It was, by far, the best sandwich I’ve ever had.
I visited SF in July for the first time. I was told by many friends that I had to visit the Ferry Building. I just about cried when I stumbled onto Miette – it was so lovely and that was before I tried any of the tasty goodies.
I was surprised that you like Miette; the things I sampled there were so-so at best. Then, I just read that Pascal Rigo (a great baker of Bay Breads fame) had a hand in some changes there. Now I’m not longer surprised Miette’s (reportedly) better!
