Summertimes 2009s

Holy Heck!  When did Fall sneak up on me!?  I could use a deep breath… how about you?

Here we are at the end of September and I’m more than ready to go shopping for winter tights and oversized sweaters… not to mention jumping in the kitchen to bake up my favorite pumpkin cookies.  Seriously.  Have you made these pumpkin cookies yet?  They’re my reason for living from October through January.

Now is not the time to talk cookies.  Can I show you a few things!?  I want to show you what my summer looked like…. up close… personal… on the fly.  All captured by my trusted camera phone.  Remember when we played the camera phone picture game a few months back?  I’m at it again.  Come take a peek and then tell me what you were up too all summer long!

Cell Phone Summertime

Q:  How many Fried Chicken Sandwiches from Bakesale Betty’s did I eat this summer?

A:  One.  That’s not nearly enough.  I’ve let myself down.  I’m working on it.

Cell Phone Summertime

My friend Zak makes his own sausage.  He’s badass like that.  He also likes compliments on his tattoo…. aaaaaand go!

Cell Phone Summertime

No… my friends and I aren’t chef groupies.  That would be weird.  Right?  Weird.

Cell Phone Summertime

Have you ever seen a fresh garbanzo bean?  Well.. you have now!  Rad.

Cell Phone Summertime

There were many…. many bottles of wine consumed between the months of May and August this year.  Wine tastings at Silver Lake Wine are ultra lovely, super approachable, and my preferred way to spend a Sunday afternoon.  Now you know.

Cell Phone Summertime

My friends and I also hold our own tastings where we sip and sit, chat and talk about wine in a way that makes us feel warm and snobby.

Cell Phone Summertime

The making of Thomas Keller inspired Espresso Sandwich Cookies.   Can I tell you a secret?  I shared a grand total of two of these cookies with my friends.  The rest were for my belly only.  True story.

Cell Phone Summertime

Flipping hot pans, taking a little trash, listening to R. Kelly and workin’ the line.  Meet Zak and Duke.

Cell Phone Summertime

I bought all this…

Cell Phone Summertime

And set up all this…

Cell Phone Summertime

So I could have a bumpin’ party like this!!

Cell Phone Summertime

And then I drank wine.  Don’t judge me.

Cell Phone Summertime

I love when my little sister helps me bake.  Frosting cupcakes takes some intense and deliberate dedication…

Cell Phone Summertime

The same sort of dedication that goes into picking just the right mushrooms at the Ferry Building in San Francisco.

Cell Phone Summertime

Blue Bottle.  I love you.  You know it’s true.  Let’s take a closer look at this picture.  Skinny boy.  Skinny jeans.  Cute hat.  Making the best coffee in the world.  He even has a tattoo that said ‘let no man fall’…. Come on ladies.  Swoooooon!

Cell Phone Summertime

Q:  How much bread is on this table at Zuni Cafe?

A:  Lots.  So much and not enough.  Um… Waiter!?  More bread please!

Cell Phone Summertime

Simon made a pumpkin pie and took pictures of it with his phone. I watched Simon make a pie and took picture of him taking pictures of his pie with my phone.  We’re just strange enough for each other.

Cell Phone Summertime

Yes.  This is happening.  This is a picture of my thighs in spandex.  These are the very thighs and fancy clippy bike shoes that are going to peddle my butt up to the top of a treacherous hill in Oakland.

Cell Phone Summertime

Yes.  This is happening.  This is a picture of my big head in a helmet.  Safety first friends.  Seriously.  Here I am halfway up the treacherous hill in Oakland.  It hurts and it sucks and I’m tired….. and I’m making it to the top of the hill so help me God!

Cell Phone Summertime

Here is the face of success.  Oooh yes.  Top of the hill success.

Cell Phone Summertime

And now I start boasting about how easy that was.  That hill wasn’t really all that hard.  The part where I was swearing and crying at the same time…?  Yea… I didn’t really mean that.

Cell Phone Summertime

Can I be honest?  I am not an easy person to ride through the Oakland hills with.  I’m slow.  I freak out sometimes.  I’ve been known to get locked in my clip shoes and topple over.  And well…. Simon must be some sort of angel because he’s still smiling.  I’m lucky.

Cell Phone Summertime

Pasta.  I’m going to humbly say that I knocked it out of the park with that one.  Daaang.

Cell Phone Summertime

Leave it to me to find the man with the most wine at Blogher San Francisco this past weekend.  Leave it to me…

Cell Phone Summertime

Leave it to me to find NotMartha and make her be my new best friend.

Cell Phone Summertime

Leave it to me to befriend crazy/lovely/hilarious Tracy of ShutterBean.  Um…. Tracy.  You and I both know that that’s not your wheelchair…. and oh how my love for you grows!!

So!  That’s how I’ve been livin’ this summer!  What about you?  What were your highlights of the summer season?  Do they involve new friends in wheelchairs that don’t belong to them?  Probably…. that makes sense.

You know what you should do?  Show off your summer.  Leave a comment with a link to a photo of your favorite summer memory.  Come on!  This’ll be fun!

    Hi Joy,

I had no idea you were in Oakland this summer! I live in Berkeley and worked in West Oakland this summer. Therefore, I biked (not with clippy shoes) past Bakesale Betty’s everyday. You know when there are EMT and firefighters in line at a food place, it’s going to be good.

One thing, where did you eat those delicious looking hamburgers?

    Thanks,
    Roxy

I’m very confused! Do you live in Oakland or LA? I am from Oakland and have been meaning to go to Bakesale Bettys for so long now! And was the picnic in Oakland or LA because I wanted to go but thought it was too far!

I have wanted to make fresh pasta for ages. Honestly, I’m a little nervous. You inspired me to just go for it. And the video post sure was helpful!
My favorite 2009 summer memory was spending my wedding anniversary in Paris with my hubby. We drank champange and fed each other blackberries on a blanket with views of the Eiffel Tower.

So fun to stop by here and visit you, Joy.

Hmm. Not sure how to do those nifty tidy links in this ole’ comment box… But this is my favorite moment from the summer: My sweet kids and their sweet bums, bless them.

Ooooh, your summer looked so fun… and tasty! I think I’m going to have to try the pumpkin cookies and the espresso sandwich cookies :)

My favorite summer picture is a toss-up between the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, the caldera in Santorini or Barcelona’s La Boqueria. We went on a Mediterranean cruise this summer, and I’m still dreaming about it!

I love the pictures of your summer!

I’ve been drinking wine more too. It was a winefest of a summer I guess.

I think I really should make those pumpkin cookies. The sooner the better. I think I might have exactly the one cup of butterscotch chips they require… It was mean to be.

Love your fantastic recap. Probably my favorite moments were watching both my kids play in the pool and run through sprinklers. Laughing. That is pure joy to me. Oh, and listening to my little boy hum while he eats:

This was a terrific summer for me, too, and my favorite part was visiting Seattle and getting to eat at Delancey. So. Good. It sounds like you had a grand summer! Honestly, my favorite summer moment was a simple meal of grilled shrimp after waiting for the charcoal grill to heat up while we sipped rum and cokes. I’m going to miss you, summer!

Hello Joy, that was a lovely post! Summer is long gone here in Montreal, and we only had about a week of hot weather this year. Bummer. Still, I had some great summer moments–best would probably be sitting by the ocean at dusk by the Bay of Fundy, with my love. But I didn’t take a photo of that, so here are some other photos from my summer:

The summer sun is going away. Boooo! We had lots of pools with lots of parties and lots of charcoal on the grill. All of it was fun. Gotta say it ended with a bang when we cooked at Canelé: http://duodishes.com/2009/09/11/canele-chefs-for-the-day/

Joy – I love your website and am loving the recent changes to have a special section for “Beyond the kitchen” which I enjoy just as much as your recipes. I am a New Zealander who spent a few days in San Francisco on my way back from Italy last year and had a delicious hamburger for lunch at Zuni so it was fantastic to see a picture that reminded me of one of my favourite meals in San Francisco.

Thank you for the re-cap. September came and went fast. I am inspired to grow garbanzo beans in my garden, thanks for the picture. This summer I took some time to take a picture a day (haven’t posted all pics taken) and here is a sample of what my summer was about. We got bees, grew some food, enjoyed butterflies and dragonflies, knitted and noticed the details. I can see how amazing life can be especially when you take time to look back. Wishing you a magical Fall and Winter.

That’s a really nice collection of summer moments you have!

I put together my favourite moment plus my favourite baked goods of the summer. And down right, there is the photo that always makes me laugh: I spent my holidays with my three best friends – so we were 4 girls in a room. These were all the shoes we had with us – for one week of holidays! :-)
