My Favorite Fall Recipes
Written by joythebaker on November 8, 2009 – 7:20 pm -Autumn is settling in. Autumn has settled in, and here I am ready to accept it. I’m also ready to accept the fact that my days in the kitchen are about to dramatically increase (if you can believe that) as my cravings for apple crisp (lovelovelovelovelovelovelove), pumpkin cookies and cranberry treats become harder to ignore. I’m less ready to embrace the way my jeans are tightening around my thighs… or maybe it’s my thighs growing inside my jeans. Either way, the tightness and the sucking in of the tummy seems to be just a part of the season.
What are you up to in the kitchen these days? Here’s some food for thought Yes… I totally just said that.
Mocha Hazelnut Marble Cake. This cake was gorgeous, classy and utterly fine… until I tried to transport it in a fancy cake stand and got this glistening chocolate glaze exactly everywhere. Everywhere. Lesson learned.
Sweet and soft Ginger Chewies. Full of molasses attitude.
Spiced Pear Walnut Cake with a praline walnut glaze. How about I just go ahead and make the glaze and then spoon it into my mouth… forget the cake. This beauty is all about the glaze.
Cinnamon Spice Buns. The dough is spiced. The filling is sugar and spice. There’s butter and glaze. Make this a part of your life please.
Vanilla Bean Rice Pudding. I ate the whole pot. The whole pot. By myself.
Pizza. Homemade pizza. Easy. Not hard. Worth it’s weight in gold and precious stones.

I heart Joy the Baker!
I too heart Joy! I’m just jealous that Rachel thought to say that before I could.
oooh you two… you’re sweet. thanks!
Ooh, LOVING that vanilla bean rice pudding. LOVING.
I too started sensing the shrinking jeans phenomenon and hence have decided to begin training for my first half marathon. Some might call it exercise bulimia, but I find it to be a healthy balance. Chocolate dipped coconut macaroons, here I come…
up and off your butt! that’s a good way to go. thanks for the inspiration. i’m making myself get up for spin class tomorrow morning… no excuses. Tonight? I’m making brown rice rice pudding… that’s better, right!?
I’ll take one of each, please. Okay, two.
I cannot wait to try the new recipes. Lovelovelovelove Joy the Baker!
I absolutely adore the pictures and everything sounds so delicious. My fall favourite at the moment is homemade raisin bread and scones… i’ve been through cheddar-jalapeno, vanilla bean, triple chocolate and cranberry corn. scones and bread. a great way to start the cool season ;0) thanks for being so inspiring Joy. this blog rocks!

Awesome looking recipes, thanks for sharing!
Well these all look amazing. I am the same way with Fall baking- I’m trying to offset the sweets with taking long walks but who am I kidding? Congrats on your Foodbuzz win- you totally deserve it!!
thank you emily! you’re rad!
I can’t wait to see when you make pumpkin cookies! Will you be sharing the recipe when you do? I’m obsessed with all things pumpkin and would love to make pumpkin cookies!
“How about I just go ahead and make the glaze and then spoon it into my mouth”
HA! You’re so cute
That marble cake is so gorgeous and luscious!
Wow – what a drool fest! All the baked goods look absolutely scrumptious. Although with it almost 100 degrees here I think I am more in the mood for a nice big fruit salad or smoothie!
These look delicious! I love autumn foods…they’re so rich and delicious! I’m a huge fan of apple and pumpkin and I’m definitely going to have to try the vanilla bean pudding. It looks remarkable! And my husband loves cinnamon rolls so those will be on our table soon too!
And Joy….don’t worry about the jeans.
Plenty of time to focus on that when it’s spring!
ooh i wish i could forget about the jeans until spring… must attack jean problem before it gets out of hand! that’s the only thing that will get me up for spin class tomorrow morning!
Okay, that’s fair.
I prefer yoga over spinning, so more power to you! I just get frustrated with putting in that effort knowing the bike will go nowhere!
I’m not sure where you’re located, but winter sports are also coming up! Personally, I love ice skating.
Mmmm that spiced pear walnut cake looks amazing!
Today I made pumpkin/oatmeal/blueberry muffins, pear crisp, and brussel sprout soup (OK that last one is way less exciting and delicious, but I had to use the sprouts up before they went bad!) – I actually forgot to put the butter into the muffins but they still turned out pretty good!
These look so incredibly delicious. I’m putting them all on my “to-make” list. I discovered your blog over the weekend and I’m so wildly glad I did. You’re absolutely inspiring — especially for an amateur baker like myself.
I’m glad you found me Brandi!
Oh! And I also started making vanilla extract today…following your instructions, of course!
Oh my god, i love autumnal baked goods more than anything. you simply MUST try martha stewart’s iced hermit cookies! full of molasses, raisins, and a hefty lump of ginger, topped with more candied ginger! or her pumpkin cookies with brown butter icing! okay, i’m getting carried away…
those hermit cookies are totally on my ‘to bake’ list!
Oh boy, I am drooling here… All these look fabulous!
Hmmm, those look amazing. Especially the apple crisp and the mocha cake.
I’m trying to be good and healthy at the moment, so my autumn favourite are plain and simple baked potatoes with sour cream.
I did however try out the Superfood berry biscuits from Cookie Magic by Kate Shirazi recently, and they’re not only sort of healthy (lots of dried fruit, oats and wholemeal flour), but also very, very yummy!
I have been thinking about making homemade pizza lately (or foccacia). It’s a sign! Now just to decide on toppings, mmm so many choices. You idea of olives is great too.
I’ve been waiting for cooler weather! Texas is still hitting degrees in the 80s and it is unfortunately taking away from the seasonal mood.
If I bake it will it come? *que-spooky-music*
I think your apple crisp might make my muggy Texas weather crisp. Or at least that will be my excuse. I foresee some buttered pecan Blue Bell icecream to top it. Blue Bell is Texan. Have you had it yet, Joy? I should ship you some. MmmMmmMmmMmmmmmmMmmmmm.
I have yet to have Blue Bell ice cream. oooh, don’t even tell me what i’m missing. it’s no doubt epic. you must make this apple crisp. damn the warm weather… do it!
I heart Joy the baker and the FALL!! thanks for sharing these!! x0x
I can’t decide which to try first. These all sound scrumptious!
Oh boy, all of them look delicious! I’ll have to try!
Autumn has to be one of the best seasons! The leaves turning, the air getting crisp, the cold being a perfect excuse to indulge in warm, rich scrummy puddings! yum yum yum! ur pics make it look all the better! that rice pudding and those ginger chewies look delicious! well they all do! Mmmmmmmm!
The spiced pear walnut cake looks amazing!
these array of food says comfort…
Ohhhh it all looks so amazing, like you!
Oh, fall baked goods. I think the season deserves one sweet a day….
Autumn at your place looks pretty delicious! I made a similar list last week but yours is so much more visually inspiring!

Can’t wait to get started baking for the holidays!! I bought two cookbooks this weekend, a Christmas baking magazine & a cookbook last weekend!! Want to make up a bunch of treat packages to give as gifts – yum!! Thanks for sharing your favorites!
I can’t wait to try the Mocha Cake. Cake is my ultimate comfort food. Thanks for sharing!
All your photo’s look amazing! I want to make them all. I too love love Joy. I always look forward to getting my email to see if I have a post from Joy so I can look at all your lucious food.
Wow all of those look so great, but that walnut glaze is speaking to me!
It seems to me that autumn is the perfect seson for baking, the days are getting shorter, it rains, there’s still no snow (which opens up a whole new range of outdoor possibilities), so we need a little something to make our lives sweeter.
Thank you!
Morning, Joy!
Quick question – I only have a toaster oven – do you think it’s possible to make the ginger cookies in it? I’m just now starting to use it to bake.
i bet if you made the cookies fairly small… maybe a scant teaspoon size, they would cook up nicely in the toaster oven. sure! let me know how it goes!
This is a great collection of beautiful fall recipes!
I think it’s time for a sassy cookie in my life, and thank goodness that molasses cookie calls for attitude in the recipe.
This is me doing a “don’t go there” criss-cross snap.
Gorgeous photos and recipes!
Pizza is not an Autumn recipe it’s a year round flavor explosion!
it sure is a year round explosion… but i think i like it best in autumn when my kitchen isn’t so crazy hot.. you know?
I love the autumn recipe roundup you posted – some of my favorite flavors happen to appear around this time of year…makes me want to bake!
I’ve never been good at baking, but all of your favorites look so good I think you’ve inspired me to give the baking thing another shot! Thank you!
get in the kitchen and give baking another go! you can do it!
I was just thinking about something wonderful I baked last year for Thanksgiving — pumpkin pie bars — and I realized, omigod!, it’s my year anniversary with Joy the Baker.
Thanks you, Joy, for a delicious year.
happy anniversary to us… sort of!
The chocolate icing on that cake. The chocolate icing on that cake (pant pant pant).
Congratulations on winning the Foodbuzz Best Baking Blog award!!! It’s so well-deserved! The others are good, but you are the Goddess of baking.
Somebody commented before me, but it’s true- what a droolfest! Those look like irresistable recipes and when I finish the long list of other “to dos”, these recipes are next- or maybe I’ll just bump them up to the front of the line. That’ a better idea!
I stumbled on your blog and have found myself face down in pumpkin cookies, pumpkin pie bars and banana cranberry bread the past 4 days!
LOVE your baking! I can see you are truly blessed with God given talents in baking! Thanks for sharing, I can’t wait to try more!!!

I tried the apple crisp recipe last night–yummy! I added some whole cranberries to the mix and they turned it pink. Bonus! Thank you, Joy, for the great idea!!!
