Two Years of Joy the Baker, Pictured.

January 20, 2010

Joy the Baker is two years old.  Two years of cookies.  Two years of cupcakes.  Two years of pancakes.  Two years of me standing on a chair in my dining room trying to get the right shot of a slice of cake before I gobble it up.  Two years of me.  Two years of you.

Here’s what the last two years have looked like around these parts.  Come along… let’s reminisce.

Podcasting

Once upon a time I made a podcast.  It’s totally dorky.  I can’t bear to watch it.  It’s like listening to your own voice on the answering machine.  Too much.  Totally.  Dorky.

a cookie we can believe in.

I made these cookies waaaay back in the day when Barack Obama was still battling it out with Hillary Clinton.  My Dad hated it.  He hated it so much he left a nasty comment on my blog.  Yea…. that happened.  Thanks Dad.  Love you.  Always.

How to frost a cake- Step four, add caramel

A looong time ago, we talked about how to decorate a cake!  It was fun.  There was caramel.

Baker's Day Off at Disneyland

I’m pretty sure I annoyed everyone in my family by taking pictures of them eating.  Just look at this sister of mine though.  Those eyes! I’ll never get over it.  Daaaang I love that girl.

Engagement Cake

Two years ago I made an engagement cake.  Not my own engagement cake.  That wouldn’t have worked.  Yea…. wow.

Memorial Day Weekend

I’ve been to San Francisco a lot in the last two years.  There’s water.  There are bridges.  There’s amazing food.  If you’ve never been… well, now you know what you’re missing.

LA County Fair

I’ve been in love.  Love is nice.  Love should come with a warning sign.

Easy Chocolate Pudding

I’ve been on the other side of love too.  The break-up side.  Yea…. not as awesome as love.  The break-up side of love requires a lot of chocolate pudding .  More than you might think actually.  True.

I Fried

Shut up… I made doughnuts.

Daddy-o

I love my Dad’s hands.  I’ve known them my whole life… it’s kinda weird.  Those are the hands that taught me how to bake.  Thanks Dad!

fancy food

I went to the Fancy Food Show in San Francisco.  Fancy it is not.  Snoozetown it is.

Seattle

I found a gum wall in Seattle with my name spelled out in green gum.  Turns out this is equal parts awesome and terrifying.

Joy the Baker in Napa

I stomped through Napa like I owned the joint.

Dad's Buttermilk Biscuits

Buttermilk biscuits make the world right.  I know.  I’ve done the research.

times onling

Last year this little blog was named one of the 50 best food blogs in the world.  Aw, shucks.

Gluten-Free Lemon Almond and Polenta Cake

I don’t even want to tell you how many cakes I’ve dropped on the floor in two years. Let’s just say it’s between one and twelve… and it’s way more than one. Sometimes bad things happen to good cakes in my kitchen.

Easter and the Cupcake Bake Off

I’ve had fun with confetti and friends in the last two years.

S'mores Brownies

S’mores Brownies.  Amazeballs.

One Pot Spring Garden

My Mom helped my plant a One Pot Garden.  It was lovely… until I killed it.  I don’t want to talk about it.

Homemade Vanilla Extract

I made Homemade Vanilla Extract.  You should too.

Vegan Chocolate Avocado Cake

Vegan Chocolate Cake with Avocado Buttercream.  I’m a weirdo.

Joy the Baker Picnic

Last summer I threw a rooftop picnic in downtown Los Angeles…

Rooftop Picnic Times

and people actually came!!  Lots of people.  I love you people.

Pasta Making

Homemade and handmade pasta.  A dream come true.

Foodbuzzed

Last year I won Foodbuzz’s Best Baking Blog. That made me feel good about myself.  Fun fact.

Whitney and Wine

I also drank a lot of wine last year.  That made me feel good about myself too.  Wait…. that’s bad. Nevermind.

Joy the Baker Vacation

Vacation.  Real life vacation.  I ended the last two years with a vacation, a bath tub and a lovely view from behind fancy drapes.  It was just about the most amazing thing ever.

montage

But really… the most amazing thing is that you decide to come here and be a part of Joy the Baker.  Maybe you’ve been here for two years, two months or two days… however long, thank you.  Really.  This little piece of Internet has become more than I ever could have imagined.  Is that totally dorky to say?  Yea… but it’s true.  I thank you.

Joy, this is adorable. Congrats on all of your success these last two years. Can’t wait for your book!

Joy, your blog is a delight. Why don’t you stick with cookies and leave the politics out? Our country is in a bad place because of Obama. We’re broke. We’re less safe than we were before he took office. Your generation and my kids’ are going to be paying for his “generosity” for decades to come.

You seem like a smart girl, but Obama is a bad president. You were tricked.

Barbara January 29, 2010 at 9:44 pm

You know what really gets me? People who think that President Obama can just ‘fix’ eight years of what George Bush FUBARed. I just scratch my head at the whole lot of you. Nobody wants to talk about what George Bush did, how he screwed the pooch (our country), how that C student who probably can’t spell United States, put us in the worst deficit in history and started a war to finish what his father could not. You all need to get a grip. Don’t hate; congratulate.

Happy birthday! Joy is such an appropriate name for you, since you bring so much joy to so many with your lovely pictures, words and recipes

I’m afraid I cant ignore elizabeth since her miserable comment is staring at me, I think you’re wonderful for making obama cookies, and I dont think you were tricked.

Congrats on 2 years Joy!

I come to your blog when I need to escape life for a few seconds. I, like you, LOVE cake in all forms, devour butter and sugar and all things nice. You make food the way food should be made:)

I have a son who has to be on a gluten free and dairy free diet. NO one in this world should ever have to eat that way :(

Thanks for being you and for following your God given talent.

Blessings for a wonderful 3rd year :)

Cheers!

If love came with a warning sign, how would your’s read? I think mine would go something like “Warning: Slices of sheer bliss ahead, garnished with moments of terror and self loathing. May come into contact with reminders of the past, planning for the future, sudden stops and random veerings off course.”

Wow, has it only been two years? You’re a daily read for me, Joy, and even though I don’t comment much (which I totally should since most people love getting comments… at least nice ones), coming here is one of my favorite things about Food Blog World. Lots more two years, please! And a fat-free, sugar-free, calorie-free chocolate chip cookie that tastes like the real thing would be great, too.

OH! Joy!!
You really should listen to your dad….his fruit has come this far he must be a pretty smart guy:)
…But I guess I felt that way a short time in college too – you’ll grow out of it when you have children;)

We had that very same salt shaker growing up. It’s weird how seeing a picture of it brings back all these nostalgic childhood food memories… from a salt shaker? Crazy, but true.

I love your blog. It is truly one of my favorites. Keep up the excellent work!

Your blog is a delight, but sorry Obama cookies would make me sick! The obama administration is a joke and we will be paying for it for years. Our friends who make close to 200,000 dollars a year were given thousands by our government to buy a $35,000 car foriegn car. I find that outrageous, don’t you? wake up

I checked out your How to Decorate a Cake post, and thought I can totally do this. We were having some of my husband’s coworkers over for dinner Saturday night. But right before I started spreading the icing, Robb (husband) pops out of nowhere pouting, “I wanted to decorate the cake!” So, using your tutorial, Robb decorated the cake. I was pretty jealous. But can I just tell you how impressed our guests were with the butterscotch filling? It turned out awesome! Thank you especially for tips like sealing the butterscotch in a tomb of frosting so the cake didn’t get soggy and running the knife under hot water. Common sense, I suppose, but then we must not have any because they were revelations to us. Thank you again! :)

Joy, your dad is a very wise man. You, along with a lot of other Americans fell for the “feel good” Obama crap hook, line and sinker.
I came to this blog for recipes and enjoyment. I did not come to this blog for politics. I will no longer come to this blog for anything since you chose to impart your political views into a baking blog. It’s a baking blog for G*d’s sake…can’t we escape politics anywhere anymore???
Another thing…change…better be careful about “change”.
Castro changed, Mao changed, Stalin changed, Hitler changed.

joythebaker January 29, 2010 at 9:43 am

you’re right carol. my dad is a wise man. i love him. he’s tremendous.

also.. i’m going to go ahead and ask you to calm the heck down. this blog is very obviously not about politics. i merely made mention to something in my life that happened to have to do with politics. i was mostly making a joke about how my dad left a nasty comment on my blog.. yeesh. calm yourself. for real!

also. you’ve got some nerve. i mean, really. comparing our democratic president, in this fine democratic country to people like castro and mao and stalin and hitler. REALLY!? you should be ashamed of yourself. we’re blessed to live in this beautiful country with all of the amazing freedoms we have, and to relate our president to those people is offensive, trite, and ignorant.

yup. i said it. so there.

Zoe January 30, 2010 at 5:35 pm

Good on you Joy! Carol has some nasty views which makes me glad she isn’t coming back to your blog!
Don’t need her kind in here :)
Thanks for your lovely recipes, and well done on 2 years!

Congrats Joy!! Yours is by far my favorite blog… in fact, I would gladly put aside our political differences and eat Obama cookies with you. As far as I’m concerned, it’s the scrumptiousness of the cookie, not whose name is written in delicious pink icing that I’m really concerned about when it comes to your blog.

So thank you for providing me with two years of deliciousness, and here’s to many more! :~)

All this Obama cookie drama is crazy. I’ll use your words and say: sometimes a cookie is just a cookie. It’s. Not. That. Serious. Sheesh…and who cares if you like Obama. This is YOUR blog. You can do what you want!

Congrats Joy! Your blog is a beautiful, beautiful place.

P.S. I really despise when people tell me how I’ll change political views when I get older. Sorry but no one knows your future self so they shouldn’t tell you how you’re going to think.

was wondering if you have a search on your site somewhere. Seems like you would so I wouldn’t have to go through the lists of goodies – which could be very dangerous. I only found your site because I was looking for a good chocolate and orange bundt cake recipe. Thanks for any leads. Cookin’, A
