Red Velvet Engagement Cake

May 12th, 2008

So you’ve found a swell girl, and bought a swell ring.  You want to pop the question?  Why not let a cake do all the heavy lifting in the question department?  Even if a cake asks the question though, bended knee is still essential.   Essential!

Pop the question with this Red Velvet Engagement Cake.  With this two-tiered, cream cheese frosted cake, I’m sure any lady would say yes- even if only to get at the cake faster.  I’m kidding… she loves you too.

It all started when 4 layers of red velvet cake met loads of cream cheese frosting.  I baked off two 8-inch rounds and two 6-inch rounds, frosted them in cream cheese frosting, and layered the smaller on top of the larger cake with the help of two dowel supports.

Recipes for the delicious cake and frosting are here on my blog.  And if you have any questions about batter amounts… well, email me!  Don’t be shy, say hi!

The outside of the cake is decorated with a simple pearl boarder, pink dots, fresh pink roses and greet gum paste leaves.  The fresh flowers are secured within the cake by tiny plastic vases that go into the cake with just a bit of water to keep the flowers from wilting.  So clever!

That is a beautiful cake! I’m sure many guys would love to have the pressure of asking the actual question take off their shoulders! I’ll be marking the cream cheese icing recipe, as I’m always looking for yummy icing recipes to use! Yum!

And if the girl says no, then you can just take the cake back. One way to cure a broken heart? A sugar high!! I adore those flowers and the greenery decorating the cake. It looks like a piece of art! I wish I could learn how to decorate mine to beautifully.

I’m with Gigi! I’d say yes to just about anything if it meant getting my little hands on that cake! Does this make me a cake whore?

I’ve made a couple cakes with fresh flowers before and will have to find those tiny vases to keep them fresh. What a wonderful idea! Thanks for sharing.

The way to a girl’s heart is definitely through cake!

This was a rather round-about way of asking me! My answer is “yes,” of course! Yes! Yes! Yes! Now mail me my cake! Oh yeah . . . I love you.

was this cake part of an *actual* proposal? or just for fun? as for me, my fiance proposed over a meringue — perhaps you should have posted this a few months ago!

how lovely! my husband proposed by hiding my ring in a cupcake. but i would have said yes this way too!

  22. joythebaker on May 13, 2008 8:44 pm

Carole- I found them at my local cake supply store. The little cases come in very handy!
FRM- You’re hilarious!… And just like that we’re engaged.
Katy- Yea! Actual proposal! Isn’t that crazy!?
Trixie- Cupcake is a cute idea. I’m assuming you didn’t almost eat your ring. Leave it to me to eat my engagement ring. It’s not a good idea to hide anything in food around me.

What a gorgeous cake, and what a great idea - to pop the question with such a beautiful cake, who can ever refuse? :)

What a great idea for keeping the fresh flowers going! Awesome color choice too.

This looks absolutely amazing! I think I may just have to make this design for a cake that I’m planning to make for a party I’m having in honor of a recently married friend. It looks so pretty! I may just make the recipe…oh wow…now I’m hungry. Thanks for posting! :-D

I have a question! How do we get the cake so flat? Meaning, when I bake cake rounds, they are always rounded so my cake does not look perfectly sculptured and I literally have to ice it to death (not such a bad thing BUT) so that I can make it look uniformly. Any help there??? Your cakes look perfectly flat and beautiful how did you accomplish that???
