Kitchen in Transition
Written by joythebaker on March 14, 2010 – 9:46 pm -Friends,
The truth is… I haven’t quite been able to get my act together since my move.
I’ve been trying to distract you with posts about my box grater. I’ve been trying to distract you with candy giveaways…. but that’s all starting to feel a little silly.
The fact of the matter is, my KitchenAid is still unplugged and my new oven needs a good scrubbing… and, I just ate a giant slice of store bought coconut cream pie.
Want to take a peek into my new space? Suuuure you do… come on in!

Ode to my Box Grater
Written by joythebaker on March 10, 2010 – 12:56 am -I was packing up my kitchen this afternoon and I got to thinking.
I got to thinking about my box grater… which is totally weird.
As if thinking at length about my box grater weren’t odd enough… I’m now going to shovel my box grater thoughts onto your lap.
There’s butter. There’s cheese. There’s roots and veggies. All the drama and intrigue you could want from one little box grater.
aaaand… seriously… thanks for playing along. I realize I’m ridiculous.

Notes from the Road
Written by joythebaker on March 4, 2010 – 9:06 pm -This post could also be entitled:
Can’t Bake Now… I’m on the I-5.
Joy the Driver and Lauren the Snack Coordinator
Joy the Baker eats 6 pounds of Chex Mix between San Francisco and Portland
or simply… Joy the Baker moves her sister from Los Angeles to Seattle in a Budget moving truck creatively nicknamed Budgie.
It’s early Tuesday morning. My Mom makes Lauren pose with her moving truck. That’s not weird, right? Not weird at all.

Bridge Watching and other scary things.
Written by joythebaker on February 22, 2010 – 10:06 am -Let’s talk about this weekend’s adventures. There were highways, gas stations and bridges. I might have a made friends out of strangers although there was too much wine to be clear on that. Aaaaand! I taught my first cooking class. In Sonoma. That happened.
Take a peek!

My Top 10 Cookie Recipes
Written by joythebaker on February 1, 2010 – 11:55 pm -I’d like to take this moment to request a platter of Black and White Cookies from the magic little elves that are currently in my kitchen doing the dishes, in my bedroom sorting laundry, and in my shower scrubbing the tiles. Could you little elves please stop what you’re doing and make me some cookies? Fresh baked. With milk. Please… that would be great.
What? The magic little elves have taken the night off!? That’s some nerve. Some nerve.
Peanut Butter Bacon Cookies. Because everything should have bacon in it. Everything.

On The Lamb
Written by joythebaker on January 26, 2010 – 12:09 am -We three? We always have our mouths in motion, our wine glasses full and our eyes wide… looking for trouble.
Let me introduce you to On the Lamb Food and Beverage. We’re a roving catering and events firm made up of three unstoppable Los Angeles women: Whitney (the sommelier), Rachel (the chef), and Joy (the baker).
How does this all work? Here’s how:
First we find an often obscure, always stellar location around Los Angeles. We design an amazing theme and a ridiculous menu. Then, here’s the best part… we invite you. You come. You meet other cool, unpretentious people who are as dorky about food and drink as you are. You have a great time and love your life. That’s exactly how it works.
Our next event: The One Night (Stand) Speakeasy on 02.14.2010.
Would you like to keep up with On the Lamb?
Email onthelambfb (at) gmail (dot) com to put your name on the email list. Space is always limited at these shindigs, so be diligent. We know how to throw a party. That’s a fact.
All up in the Internet? You’ll also find us cavorting around Twitter and Facebook like a bunch of floozies. Join us!

The Bloggies are in town!
Written by joythebaker on January 25, 2010 – 12:22 am -

Voting is underway for the 2010 Bloggies… you know, the Weblog Awards that are now ten years strong.
What’s the deal? People blog. People make awards. People vote. It’s not too complicated… it’s also kinda fun.
I’ve used the Bloggies voting page to find some amazing new (to me) blogs.

17 and Baking. You’re my new favorite…. but I think I might have a baking bias. Honestly.
The Bloggess… ooh you have made me laugh.. oooh you have made me blush.
Oh! Now might be a good time to mention that Joy the Baker was nominated for Best Food Blog. That this happened is… I dunno… a cross between a miracle and a dirty trick. It’s fun. It’s humbling… and heck yes! I’m excited.
Go on… find some new favorites, case a few votes.

Two Years of Joy the Baker, Pictured.
Written by joythebaker on January 20, 2010 – 2:09 am -Joy the Baker is two years old. Two years of cookies. Two years of cupcakes. Two years of pancakes. Two years of me standing on a chair in my dining room trying to get the right shot of a slice of cake before I gobble it up. Two years of me. Two years of you.
Here’s what the last two years have looked like around these parts. Come along… let’s reminisce.
Once upon a time I made a podcast. It’s totally dorky. I can’t bear to watch it. It’s like listening to your own voice on the answering machine. Too much. Totally. Dorky.
I made these cookies waaaay back in the day when Barack Obama was still battling it out with Hillary Clinton. My Dad hated it. He hated it so much he left a nasty comment on my blog. Yea…. that happened. Thanks Dad. Love you. Always.

Dear Future Joy the Baker,
Written by joythebaker on December 29, 2009 – 2:41 pm -Dear Future Joy,
Once upon a time, probably a good handful of years ago, you took yourself on vacation.
This was at a time before you had kids or a husband. When you would treat yourself to the expensive shampoo and conditioner. When you were convinced that only super rich people get to own houses. When you couldn’t exactly afford to take yourself away on a fancy vacation… but you did anyway.
Future Joy… you should know that the Joy of 2009 is totally cheering you on. She wants you to have the happy husband, and the crazy kids and the mortgage and the life that makes you want to do backflips and rejoice. But with all that… I’m sure some things will just drive you batty. You might need to remember this time… this time that happening to me right now.
See… it’s quiet here. There are little napkins with embroidered animals on them.

Peppermint Meringues
Written by joythebaker on December 20, 2009 – 12:17 am -What are you up to on this fine Sunday?
Holiday shopping? Holiday partying? Trying to find a pair of pantyhose without a run in them? Yea… me too.
I thought I’d pop in and remind you of these little peppermint gems. They’re light. They’re beautiful and festive. You can put them in the oven and just about forget about them while they bake…. and yes, they look a little bit like Colgate toothpaste.
Peppermint Meringues. Because you can. Because you should.

Gifting and Regifting: The Giveaway
Written by joythebaker on December 11, 2009 – 2:50 am -I’m a regifter.
Yep.
Please reserve your judgement. This is about to get interesting.
See… I’ve been given all sorts of gifts this year. From two blogger conferences, I’ve amassed enough kitchen supplies to equip a small army of chefs.
The good news is that I want to share all of this loot with you. It’s not that I don’t love these things, it’s just that I love regifting more. It’s like the most fun recycling… ever. That’s where you come in.
I’ve got silly whisks. I’ve got gorgeous cookbooks. I’ve got coffee and milk frothers. I’ve got choppers and tenderizers. Cuisinart, people. I’ve got fancy sporks and way cool forks… all sorts of little gems.
I’m regifting four little bundles of kitchen goodies to four of you. Keep the goodies as a gift to yourself or regift them this holiday season. I won’t tell a soul!
To enter this (both humble and perhaps ethically questionable) giveaway, just leave a comment in this post sharing the best holiday gift you’ve ever received. Comments are accepted until Sunday at noon.

Dad’s Perfect Sweet Potato Pie
Written by joythebaker on November 20, 2009 – 2:43 am -I have a relationship with this pie. That’s normal, right?
The smell of this pie takes me back to the days six year old me would run screaming through our lime green, hallway shaped kitchen in anticipation of pie and ice cream and the imminent holiday festivities such a dessert suggested.
My Dad has been making this pie, with more cinnamon, with less coriander, with two eggs, with four eggs, with all sorts of variations, for… oh, just my entire life.
Believe it or not, it’s hard to write about something you’re so close to. Two things here are strange. One… I’m so close to a pie. Two… I’m having trouble writing about dessert! Oooh Lordy.
Here’s what I want you to know about this Sweet Potato Pie. Excuse me while I stumble through this.
This pie is made with orange fleshed sweet potatoes. Maybe you call them yams. Maybe you call them sweet potatoes. The difference continues to perplex and bore me.
If you’re wondering what heaven might smell like, whip this pie up, throw it in the oven, wait 20 minutes then take a deep breath somewhere near the oven. There. Heaven. Coriander, nutmeg, cinnamon and brown sugar heaven.
This pie can be made with my Easy No-Roll Pie Crust. You win. I win. Pillsbury pre-made pie crust loses. It’s better this way. Trust me.
Sweet Potato Pie. It’s beauty. It’s love. If you think I’m exaggerating… then we’re obviously not friends.

In An Envelope…
Written by joythebaker on November 17, 2009 – 12:29 am -Here’s a fun fact: my Mom is a scrapbooker. She’s a serious scrapbooker. She’s got the paper cutters, the corner choppers, the fancy albums and colorful background paper… there are stickers…. so so many stickers. She’s for real. Scrapbooking is the new rubber stamping. Remember the rubber stamp craze!? Yea, we’ve moved on. Scrapbooking.
I went to my parents’ house a few days ago to find these envelopes gracing the brick fireplace. The envelope in front had my name on it. I was hoping for an early Christmas stocking. Boy oh boy did I get it. Among other darling and embarrassing photos of myself, I found a chronological history of my school days. From preschool to high school. Every cute, awkward and downright horrifying picture.
Now. Because I don’t know any better. Because I’m certifiably batty… allow me to share with you preschool through seventh grade. The later, more awkward years will follow, and we’ll all cry.
Though she will deny it, my Mom gave me this haircut herself. I remember very well. Even at four, I knew how ridiculous I looked.

My Kitchen Basics
Written by joythebaker on October 24, 2009 – 1:03 pm -I cleared out my cooking cupboard and piled everything up on a table… I’m trying to make a point.
I think it’s important you know that you don’t need cabinets full of fancy equipment to make glorious things happen in the kitchen.
I think it’s important you know that I don’t have the most, biggest, nor the best equipment in my kitchen. I do seem to have enough… and I’m scrappy enough to make things work.
Let’s talk kitchen gear: what you must have and what you might want to have on hand.
Aaaand, go!

Swabbing
Written by joythebaker on October 13, 2009 – 7:57 pm -What’s going on in my world?
Oooh the usual… just swabbing my cheeks, barcoding the samples, labeling them a biohazard, shoving them in an envelope and leaving them for the postman. That’s normal… I do this nearly everyday.
I’m swabbing because I just put myself on the Be The Match list with the National Marrow Donation Program. The National Marrow Donation Program houses a giant list and genetic samples of possible donors… a list about 12 million people long. Dang! Doctors look for genetic matches for patients that suffer from life threatening illnesses like leukemia and lymphoma. Sometimes doctors and patients find a genetic match among the millions on the list… sometimes they don’t.
If I’m a match, some doctors will come to knock me out and take bone marrow from my lower back. Someone gets my good bone marrow and I grow my own bone marrow back. Success! I decided to become a part of the National Marrow Donation Program because I feel blessed enough to be strong and healthy, and would be more than happy to share that health with someone else.
It’s a bit commitment … one that I considered for months before signing up. See, there’s needles… and many hours of prep and testing before the actual donation begins. And… needles.
I’m not telling you about the National Marrow Donation Program because I want you to rush out and sign up. It was the right choice for me… but it might not be for everyone. But… if you think marrow donation might be right up your alley, well then heck! Get on it! I just wanted to share. Now you know what I’m up to when I’m not in the kitchen making cookie dough, or avoiding dishes, or snacking, or drinking wine, or being otherwise silly and unproductive.
Now you know.

Summertimes 2009s
Written by joythebaker on September 27, 2009 – 10:51 pm -Holy Heck! When did Fall sneak up on me!? I could use a deep breath… how about you?
Here we are at the end of September and I’m more than ready to go shopping for winter tights and oversized sweaters… not to mention jumping in the kitchen to bake up my favorite pumpkin cookies. Seriously. Have you made these pumpkin cookies yet? They’re my reason for living from October through January.
Now is not the time to talk cookies. Can I show you a few things!? I want to show you what my summer looked like…. up close… personal… on the fly. All captured by my trusted camera phone. Remember when we played the camera phone picture game a few months back? I’m at it again. Come take a peek and then tell me what you were up too all summer long!
